Bari is located in the “heel” of Italy’s boot on the Adriatic Sea coast. It’s the capital of Puglia and reportedly houses the remains of St. Nicholas — Santa Claus — in the 11th-century Basilica di San Nicola. Students go to Bari for university, lending an energetic edge to the old city.

Nonetheless, Bari offers a slower pace of life than neighboring city Lecce. People aren’t in a hurry, and this lends a laid-back vibe to the incredible trattorias, where lunch is an event and the delicious cuisine is inexpensive. Piazza del Ferrarese along the waterfront is a great place for people watching and often offers a bustling outdoor market. Similarly, the Piazza Mercantile in the heart of Bari boasts many shops and cafes. It’s also a place where Italian tourists and locals alike gather. If you have time, check out the Museo del Succorpo della Cattedrale, which houses a subterranean museum filled with ancient historical relics.
